Keyword Research
Real Google volumes · 213 countries · Golden picks · AI clustering · quick-wins from GSC.
What it is
Keyword Research takes a seed keyword (e.g. 'leather bags') and explodes it into hundreds of related search terms enriched with REAL DataForSEO data: monthly search volume, keyword difficulty (0–100), cost-per-click (a proxy for commercial intent), and search intent (informational / commercial / transactional / navigational). 213 countries supported. Golden picks (high volume + low difficulty + commercial value) are flagged with their own badge; you can verify any Golden pick still on heuristic estimates against real Google data in one click. AI clustering groups your pool into 4–10 semantic themes; the Keyword Ideas action expands a seed into Related + Questions (Ahrefs-parity). Two GSC-powered cards layer your REAL performance data over the research: 'Your keywords on Google' and 'Quick-win keywords' (already ranking #11–20 with high impressions — the easiest wins in SEO).
Why it matters
You can write the best article in the world, but if nobody searches for the topic, it generates zero traffic. Keyword research tells you where the demand IS before you spend time creating content. The 'Quick-wins' card especially: pushing a keyword from position #14 to #5 typically gives you 5–10× more clicks, with no new content needed. The 30-day data cache means each keyword you ever look up costs us once — so heavy researchers get amortised pricing as the cache warms.
How to use it (step-by-step)
Follow these in order. Each step is 30 seconds to 2 minutes.
Step 1
Enter a seed keyword
Pick the country (Global = worldwide; 213 countries supported), type a broad term, click Research (5 credits — covers volume, KD, CPC, and intent in one shot).
Step 2
Read the overview cards
Avg KD with a verdict ('Easy field' vs 'Tough field'), total volume + top-5 contributors, CPC distribution (informational / commercial / premium), and the difficulty spread with percentages. Hover anything for the exact numbers.
Step 3
Filter + sort the table
All / Golden / 100% accurate filters on the LEFT; AI actions on the RIGHT. The toolbar sticks to the top as you scroll so switching filters works from row 200 too.
Step 4
Click 'How to fix' on any keyword (force refresh)
Volatile / seasonal keywords can drift — the small refresh icon next to any row breaks the 30-day cache and pulls live data again for 1 credit. Only charged on success.
Step 5
Verify N golden picks (4 credits per 25)
Golden picks sitting on heuristic estimates can be promoted to real Google data in one click. Re-decides Golden status from the real numbers — some drop out, the survivors are 100% accurate.
Step 6
Cluster keywords by topic (1 credit)
Once you have 10+ keywords, click Cluster — Brain groups them into 4–10 semantic themes with intent labels. Use one cluster per article on your content plan. Re-cluster within 60 minutes is FREE if you don't like the first attempt.
Step 7
Get Keyword Ideas (2 credits)
Expands the active seed into 100+ Related + Questions with real volumes from the DataForSEO Labs related-keywords endpoint. Saved on the session so it survives reload.
Step 8
Export the report from the hero
PDF · HTML · Print · public Share link in the hero top-right (every module follows this convention). The report carries KPIs, the difficulty spread, top-25 table, Golden picks, and your clusters.
Step 9
Send Golden picks to Rank Tracker
Click the + icon on any row → keyword lands in Rank Tracker with full context (volume, KD, intent, country). Closes the 'research → track → report' loop.

"Verify golden" + per-keyword force-refresh.
Golden = high volume × low KD × commercial-leaning CPC — a deterministic formula you can audit. Verify Golden pulls REAL Google data for Golden picks still on heuristic estimates (4 credits per 25). For volatile / seasonal keywords, the small refresh icon on any row breaks the 30-day cache and re-fetches just that one (1 credit, never charged on failure).
- Deterministic golden formula — auditable, not a black box
- Verified-100% badges = real DataForSEO data
- Per-keyword force-refresh (1cr) for volatile seasonal queries
- Refund-on-fail: failed clusters and refreshes don't burn credits

From a golden pick
Why Outerank
Things Ahrefs and SEMrush make you click 10 times for.
The workflow advantages — not features, but the steps Outerank removes from your day.
Niche-aware seeds, not blanks
Outerank reads your project's keywords + niche to suggest seeds the moment you open the page. No more staring at an empty box.
Deterministic 'golden' formula
Volume × difficulty × CPC, weights you can audit. We tell you exactly why a keyword is golden — not 'AI says so'.
Real Google data across 213 countries
Volume + KD + CPC + intent from DataForSEO. Same API the big tools use. Heuristic fallback keeps the module working if DFS is ever down.
Cache-first · 30-day TTL · global
Each keyword is paid for ONCE. After that every customer (same country/language) reads from cache for 30 days. Heavy researchers see unit cost amortise to zero.
Per-keyword force-refresh
Volatile or seasonal? The small refresh icon on any row breaks the 30-day cache and pulls fresh data for just that one keyword. 1 credit · never charged on failure.
Free re-cluster within 60 min
Don't like the first cluster Brain produced? Re-cluster the same session within 60 minutes and it's FREE. Lets you throw away a bad first attempt without paying twice.
GSC quick-wins — biggest ROI in SEO
Connect Google Search Console and we surface keywords already ranking #11–20 with high impressions. Push one to page 1 with one well-placed internal link.
Sticky toolbar + 'Since last research' strip
Filter + AI-action toolbar sticks to the top as you scroll tall lists. A green delta strip tells you what changed since your previous session — cross-module convention shared with Site Audit + IL.
Every research session saved · report-ready
Re-open any past research for free, clusters + ideas restored. Export the report from the hero top-right (PDF · HTML · Print · public Share). Same export grammar as every other module.
What costs credits
No surprises. Browsing and viewing saved results is always free.
Pro tips
- →Keywords with the green '100%' badge have live Google data; 'Est.' ones are estimates. Hit the small refresh icon next to any row to break the 30-day cache and pull fresh data for 1 credit — only charged if Google had something new.
- →If you see a quiet amber banner saying 'Real keyword data is temporarily unavailable', the heuristic path is still working. Live data resumes automatically when DataForSEO is back.
- →Difficulty 0–29 = easy field if your domain has any authority. 30–59 = realistic 3–6 month plays. 60+ = years of work or skip in favor of long-tails.
- →High CPC + low difficulty = commercial gold. Advertisers pay for those clicks because they convert. The CPC distribution card breaks the pool into Informational / Commercial / Premium buckets so you can see where the money is.
- →Don't like the first cluster Brain produced? Re-cluster within 60 minutes and it's FREE — lets you throw away a bad first attempt without paying twice.
- →Every research is saved as a session in the left sidebar. Old sessions stay accessible for free — useful for tracking what you've already explored or for comparing seed-by-seed.
- →Use 'Import seeds from a competitor URL' to steal 20–30 keyword ideas from any page in seconds — free, no credit cost. Click a chip to load it into the research box.
- →Watch the 'Since last research' delta strip when you come back to a project — it tells you in one line what changed since your previous session.
Plain-English glossary
Every bit of jargon on this page, explained.
- Seed keyword
- The broad starting term you type in. We expand it into hundreds of related keyword ideas.
- Search volume
- Roughly how many times people search that term on Google per month. Higher = more potential traffic.
- Difficulty (KD)
- 0–100 estimate of how hard it is to rank on page 1. Lower is easier.
- CPC
- Cost-Per-Click — what advertisers pay for that keyword. High CPC = strong buying intent (people who convert).
- Intent
- What the searcher is trying to do: informational (learn), commercial (compare), transactional (buy), navigational (find a brand). Matches the article format to the keyword.
- Golden keyword
- Our badge for the sweet spot: high volume + low difficulty + commercial value. The keywords worth writing about first.
- 100% vs Est.
- 100% = real Google data from DataForSEO (exact). Est. = heuristic estimate. We pull real data for the top-25 by heuristic volume to keep cost low; verify Golden picks brings the rest up.
- Quick-win
- A keyword you already rank #11–20 for (page 2). Small effort can push it to page 1 for a big traffic jump.
- Force-refresh
- The small refresh icon next to each row. 1 credit to break the 30-day cache and pull a fresh live read — use it on volatile / seasonal keywords.
- Cluster cooldown
- 60 minutes after a successful clustering, re-clustering the same session is FREE. Lets you throw away a bad first attempt without paying twice.
- DFS-down banner
- Amber strip that appears when DataForSEO credentials lapse. The heuristic estimator keeps research working; live data resumes automatically.
- Since last research
- One-line green delta strip above the results card — appears when 2+ sessions exist AND something meaningfully changed (keywords delta + prior seed + prior date).

How we compare
Honest comparison — where we win, where the big tools win.
vs. Ahrefs Keywords Explorer
Ahrefs has the bigger database but starts at $129/mo. We pull real DataForSEO Google data across 213 countries, cache it for 30 days globally so unit cost amortises to ~$0, and unify research + AI clustering + GSC quick-wins + Keyword Ideas in one screen. Plus: AI cluster refund if Brain fails, per-keyword force-refresh, and report-export from the hero.
vs. SEMrush
SEMrush is comparable on data; we add: AI clustering with 60-min free re-cluster, GSC opportunity finder, per-session history so old researches don't bleed into new ones, and a cross-module convention (export controls in hero, 'Since last research' delta strip) shared with Site Audit + Internal Links.
vs. Free tools (Ubersuggest, Keyword Tool)
Free tools give you ideas but no real Google volume data, no GSC integration, and no AI clustering. You'd be flying blind.
