If you see an amber 'DEMO MODE · No AI engines connected' banner at the top, every citation number below is Claude estimating, not real ChatGPT/Perplexity/etc responses. Demo mode is FREE — your credits aren't charged — but never report demo results to clients as real data. Connect 1+ engine in Settings → AI Engines to flip the module to real-data mode (credits start applying).

Run a GEO scan (free, Overview tab)

For each prompt where you weren't cited, find the page that targets that intent, paste a paragraph, hit 'Rewrite for AI' (2cr · authorship-leak guarded). When 0 AI engine keys are connected, the citation tracker falls back to Claude estimating what each engine WOULD say. Amber banner makes it explicit, billing is waived — your credits are not charged in demo mode.
Citation vs Mention
Citation = your domain is in the engine's citation list (the strong signal). Mention = your brand name appears in the answer body without a link (still valuable for AI memory).
Citation rate

Which AI engines are tracked?
Six consumer AI search surfaces: ChatGPT (OpenAI gpt-4o-search-preview), Perplexity (Sonar), Gemini (with Google Search grounding), Claude (Anthropic web_search_20250305 tool), Google AI Overviews (via DataForSEO SERP ai_mode element), and Grok (xAI grok-3 with live search). Each is queried for REAL when its API key is configured. Without keys, the module enters DEMO mode (Claude estimating · clearly labelled · zero credit charge).
Why does the banner say DEMO MODE?
If no AI engine keys are connected on the backend, the citation tracker can't actually query ChatGPT or Perplexity — it falls back to Claude estimating what each engine might say. The amber banner makes that explicit so you never report demo results to clients as real. Demo mode is also FREE — your credits are NOT charged for citation checks or snippet previews while no engines are connected.
How do I flip the module to real-data mode?
Connect 1+ AI engine API key on the backend (admin sets in /opt/outerank/deploy/.env). Cheapest is Perplexity Sonar at ~$0.005/query. One key flips the whole module — banner disappears, the citation tracker queries real engines, credits start applying. See Settings → AI Engines for current connection status per engine.
What's the difference between 'cited' and 'mentioned'?
Cited = your domain is in the engine's source list (strong signal — drives traffic). Mentioned = your brand name appears in the answer text without a link (still valuable for AI memory). We score both.
What is the Brand Authority Graph?
AI search engines don't pull citations from random websites — they prefer authoritative source platforms they trust as ground-truth: Wikipedia, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, G2, Trustpilot, Capterra, Product Hunt, Glassdoor. The Authority Graph runs `site:host "brand"` searches via DataForSEO across all 8 and tells you which platforms list you (open profile) vs which you should claim (signup URL). Weighted score 0-100. 7-day cache. 1 credit per scan. The diagnostic that tells you whether AI engines even know you exist.
What is AI Snippet Preview?
Single-prompt diagnostic asking the AI engine 'Describe {your brand} in 3 sentences.' The answer tells you what the AI currently believes about your brand identity. Different from Citation Tracker (5-prompt buyer-style batch) — this is the pulse-check for 'does the AI know us correctly?' 1 credit in real mode · FREE in demo mode (clearly labelled as Claude estimate).
How does competitor benchmarking work?
Every prompt is also scored for each of your tracked competitors. The leaderboard ranks everyone by citation rate so you see who's winning, and click-to-fix recommendations explicitly call out the rival you need to close the gap on.
